Spirituality

Spirituality at St Stephen’s Church of England Primary School

At St Stephen’s CE Primary School, spirituality is woven through every aspect of school life and is rooted in our Christian vision:

“Serving our diverse community with compassion to provide the best start for all.” Inspired by the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we encourage every child to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others, the world around them and God.

We view spirituality as the opportunity to pause, reflect, wonder and grow. It is not confined to Religious Education or Collective Worship; rather, it is developed through the curriculum, relationships, experiences and daily interactions across our school community.

Developing Spirituality Through Our ‘In, Out, Up’ Approach

Our spirituality curriculum is built around three key dimensions:

In – Understanding Ourselves

We provide opportunities for children to develop a sense of self, identity and personal reflection. Through PSHE, worship, mindfulness activities and classroom discussions, children are encouraged to consider their strengths, values, hopes and worries. They learn to reflect on who they are and who they aspire to become.

Out – Understanding Others and the World

Children are encouraged to look beyond themselves and develop empathy, compassion and respect for others. Through our Christian values, charitable work, ambassador roles, World Religions Day, community partnerships and collaborative learning, pupils learn that they can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Up – Exploring Meaning, Purpose and Faith

As a Church of England school, we create opportunities for children to explore life's big questions and develop their understanding of faith and belief. Through Collective Worship, Religious Education and reflective experiences, pupils are encouraged to think deeply about purpose, hope, justice, forgiveness and what it means to live a life of compassion and service.

How We Develop Spirituality

Spiritual development is intentionally planned across the curriculum and through enrichment opportunities. Children are encouraged to experience:

  • Awe and Wonder through nature, scientific discovery, music, art and educational visits.

  • Reflection and Stillness through worship, prayer, mindfulness and quiet moments for personal thought.

  • Big Questions by exploring meaning, belief, morality and purpose in RE, PSHE and other curriculum areas.

  • Relationships and Compassion by developing empathy, forgiveness, friendship and kindness through our Christian values.

  • Moral Awareness by considering choices, consequences, fairness and justice in everyday situations.

  • Creativity and Imagination through art, music, drama and opportunities to express personal responses to learning.

  • Belonging and Community through teamwork, worship, house groups and celebrating the diversity of our school family.

  • Meaning and Purpose through reflection on personal goals, aspirations and the impact they can have on the world around them.

Collective Worship and Spiritual Growth

Collective Worship plays an important role in nurturing spirituality and is inclusive, invitational and inspirational for all members of our community. Through biblical teaching, prayer, reflection and discussion, pupils are encouraged to consider how Christian values can influence their daily lives and relationships. Worship provides opportunities for children of all faiths and none to engage in moments of reflection, connection and peace.

Flourishing Together

Our aim is for every child to leave St Stephen’s with a strong sense of self-worth, a respect for others, an awareness of the wider world and a growing understanding of faith, meaning and purpose. Through our vision, values and curriculum, we strive to enable all members of our community to flourish spiritually, emotionally, academically and socially.
